Amit Shah to Launch India’s First Driver-Owned Cooperative Taxi Service ‘Bharat Taxi’ on Feb 5

India’s first cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, Bharat Taxi, aims to empower drivers and reshape urban mobility.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to launch India’s first cooperative-sector ride-hailing service, Bharat Taxi, on February 5 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ and seeks to promote inclusive, citizen-centric mobility while strengthening India’s cooperative movement.

Bharat Taxi is a driver-owned and driver-led platform, marking a major departure from conventional aggregator models. Operating under the principle ‘Sarathi Hi Malik’, drivers—referred to as Sarathis—are both stakeholders and service providers, ensuring fair profit-sharing and enhanced economic security.

During the launch, the top six performing Sarathis since the platform’s soft launch will be recognized with share certificates, personal accident insurance of ₹5 lakh, and family health insurance of ₹5 lakh. This reflects a strong focus on driver welfare, long-term financial stability, and social security.

The event will also include the signing of nine Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with key public and private partners to strengthen operational integration, digital empowerment, safety measures, and service delivery. Bharat Taxi operates under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, and follows a zero-commission, surge-free pricing model.

Since its inception on June 6, 2025, the platform has onboarded over three lakh drivers and completed more than 10,000 daily rides across Delhi-NCR and Gujarat. Special programs such as ‘Sarathi Didi’ and ‘Bike Didi’ have encouraged women’s participation, with over 150 women drivers already part of the cooperative.

Described as the world’s largest cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, Bharat Taxi plans a nationwide expansion over the next two years. The roadmap includes establishing support centres in every state, enhancing social security for drivers, and building a sustainable, inclusive mobility ecosystem that prioritizes transparency, fairness, and the national digital public infrastructure.
