Amit Shah Stresses Role Of Constitution And Judiciary In Democracy Growth

Amit Shah highlights the Constitution and judiciary as key pillars strengthening India’s democracy.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday underscored the importance of the Constitution and the judiciary in strengthening India’s democratic framework, stating that both institutions have played a crucial role in ensuring stability and continuity since Independence. He made the remarks while speaking at the launch of two books authored by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

Addressing the gathering in New Delhi, Shah said that changes brought about by Parliament and state assemblies since 1947 have been accepted peacefully, without any violence, reflecting the deep-rooted nature of democracy in India. He emphasized that this continuity is a defining feature of the country’s political system and highlights the strength of constitutional governance.

The Home Minister further noted that the Constitution, along with the judiciary, has been central in protecting citizens’ rights and maintaining public trust in democratic institutions. He said people in India have confidence that in cases of injustice, constitutional remedies are available and accessible through the legal system.

Shah added that the judiciary serves as a critical safeguard in situations where individual rights are challenged. He remarked that “if there is an assault on rights, the doors of justice are open,” reinforcing the idea that the rule of law remains a cornerstone of governance in the country.

His comments were made during the launch of Mehta’s books titled “The Bench, the Bar and the Bizarre” and “The Lawful and the Awful”, which explore themes related to legal practice and courtroom experiences. The event brought together members of the legal fraternity and highlighted the intersection of law, governance, and democratic values.

The remarks come at a time when discussions around constitutional institutions and judicial independence continue to remain central in public discourse, with leaders across the political spectrum emphasizing the role of the Constitution in safeguarding democratic rights and ensuring institutional accountability.
