Amit Shah Confirms Smart Border Project Is In Final Implementation Stage

Amit Shah says Smart Border Project is nearing completion.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced that the Centre is in the final stages of developing a “Smart Border” initiative, with pilot projects set to be rolled out across multiple international frontiers, including sensitive stretches guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF). Addressing BSF personnel at the Lankamura Border Outpost along the India–Bangladesh frontier near Agartala, Shah said India’s traditional border management systems must evolve to counter emerging and technology-driven threats.

He noted that modern border security challenges now extend beyond infiltration to include drone-based smuggling, narcotics trafficking, human trafficking, counterfeit currency networks, arms and cattle smuggling, illegal migration, and other cross-border criminal activities. Shah said each border region faces distinct security concerns and therefore requires a specialised and technology-enabled response system. He stated that the proposed Smart Border framework aims to create an integrated security architecture capable of detecting and preventing all forms of cross-border crime through advanced surveillance and coordinated enforcement mechanisms.

According to the Home Minister, the initiative is currently in its final planning phase and will be tested through pilot projects at selected locations across the country. The outcomes of these trials, he said, will be used to develop a comprehensive national border management model that can be deployed across all international frontiers in a phased manner.

He further emphasised that the new system will not rely solely on security forces but will also integrate district administrations, police units, and local institutions in border regions. Shah said effective border security depends on coordinated participation from all stakeholders living and working in frontier areas, particularly in vulnerable and strategically important zones.

Highlighting Tripura’s geographical significance, which shares an 856-kilometre international border with Bangladesh, Shah said securing the frontier is essential for both national security and the protection of India’s economic and social stability. He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening border infrastructure and upgrading ageing fencing systems, noting that approvals have already been granted to replace 119 kilometres of outdated fencing out of approximately 650 kilometres identified for renewal.

Shah also linked border security to the broader vision of a developed India by 2047, stating that sustained economic growth requires a secure and stable external environment. He said combating smuggling, drug trafficking, fake currency circulation, and human trafficking remains a central priority for border management agencies.

The event also marked World Environment Day observances, where Shah called for environmental protection to be treated as a mass movement rather than a symbolic annual exercise. He stressed the importance of afforestation in addressing climate change and ecological degradation, noting that Central Armed Police Forces have planted around 6.4 crore saplings since 2019, with expanded plantation targets set for the coming years.

During the programme, Shah planted an agarwood sapling and virtually inaugurated accommodation facilities for BSF personnel while laying the foundation stone for new infrastructure projects. He also praised the dedication of border security personnel serving in difficult terrain and extreme climatic conditions across the country. The programme was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha along with senior officials from security forces, intelligence agencies, and border management departments.
