Amit Shah Announces Smart Border Framework To Strengthen Security And Curb Infiltration
India to deploy Smart Border system to curb infiltration.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced that the Centre will roll out a nationwide “Smart Border” project within the next year, aiming to strengthen surveillance and security across India’s international frontiers while intensifying action against illegal immigration. The announcement was made during the Border Security Force (BSF) Investiture Ceremony 2026 held at Vigyan Bhawan, where personnel were also honoured for exemplary service and sacrifice.
Shah said the proposed framework would create an integrated, technology-driven security grid across India’s nearly 6,000-kilometre international border. The system is expected to combine advanced surveillance tools such as drone detection systems, radar networks, and high-resolution cameras to enhance real-time monitoring. According to the Home Ministry, the objective is to modernise border management and reduce infiltration risks through faster detection and coordinated response mechanisms.
Describing illegal migration as a “planned conspiracy,” Shah asserted that the government follows a zero-tolerance approach toward unauthorized entry into the country. He said every illegal migrant would be identified and deported in order to safeguard what he described as India’s demographic balance. The Home Minister emphasised that enforcement would be strengthened through improved coordination between central and state agencies operating along sensitive border zones.

Shah also directed the Border Security Force to expand its intelligence network beyond traditional border outposts. He called for closer collaboration with state police, district administrations, and local revenue authorities to identify infiltration routes and curb cross-border smuggling activities, including cattle trafficking. He further highlighted the importance of coordination with border states such as West Bengal, Assam, and Tripura to ensure effective implementation of the proposed security grid.
The Home Minister also announced plans to establish a High-Power Demography Mission aimed at addressing long-term challenges related to illegal immigration. He drew parallels with the government’s efforts against Left-wing extremism, stating that border security required a sustained and comprehensive approach that targets root causes. Shah praised the BSF, noting its evolution from 25 battalions at its inception in 1965 to a force of around 2.7 lakh personnel, now regarded as one of the world’s largest border guarding organisations.
The ceremony concluded with Shah honouring BSF personnel for their service and bravery, particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. He said the force remains a symbol of national security and resilience, playing a critical role in safeguarding India’s sovereignty across some of its most challenging and sensitive frontiers.
