Amazon Eyes Massive $50 Billion Stake in OpenAI to Deepen AI Alliance
Talks underway for Amazon to lead funding round and integrate OpenAI tech across platforms.
Amazon is negotiating a blockbuster investment of up to $50 billion in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, according to sources familiar with the discussions. If finalized, this would represent roughly half of a potential $100 billion funding round for the AI leader. The deal could also expand existing ties, allowing Amazon to incorporate OpenAI’s advanced models into its products, provide cloud computing power, and give employees access to the technology for internal use.
The talks highlight OpenAI’s enormous capital needs to fuel its rapid AI development and infrastructure costs. CEO Sam Altman has been actively courting major investors, including tech giants, chipmakers, and sovereign funds. Other participants reportedly in discussions for the round include Nvidia and SoftBank. Details remain fluid, and the round is not yet closed, with figures subject to change.
This potential partnership would significantly strengthen links between Amazon and OpenAI, despite Amazon’s longstanding support for rival Anthropic. It follows a pattern of strategic investments where cloud providers and chip suppliers back AI startups in exchange for preferred access to computing resources and models. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is personally involved in the negotiations with Altman, underscoring the deal’s strategic importance.

OpenAI is pursuing this massive capital infusion amid preparations for a possible initial public offering targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. Executives have privately expressed concerns about rival Anthropic potentially listing first. The company is also exploring investments from Middle Eastern funds, which could push its valuation toward $830 billion. Previous reports indicated OpenAI had discussed raising up to $30 billion from SoftBank and utilizing Amazon’s chips.
Neither Amazon nor OpenAI has commented publicly on the ongoing talks. Should the investment proceed, it would mark one of the largest single commitments in the AI sector and reshape competitive dynamics in cloud computing and generative AI.
