Akhilesh Yadav Slams BJP’s 24-Hour UP Assembly ‘Stunt’
SP chief calls out “sleeping” Yogi ministers
Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav unleashed a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s unprecedented 24-hour monsoon session, accusing the Yogi Adityanath government of prioritizing “event management” over substantive governance. The session, focused on discussing the Uttar Pradesh Vision Document 2047, began at 11 a.m. on Wednesday and continued until Thursday morning, drawing sharp criticism from the opposition leader.
Yadav posted a selfie of SP legislators on X, showcasing their presence in the Assembly hall overnight, with the caption, “The government slept, the opposition stayed awake!” He argued that the BJP’s decision to hold a marathon session exposed its failure to govern effectively, questioning how many ruling party ministers and MLAs remained present throughout. “The public deserves to know the logic behind this 24-hour drama. Why reduce session days and stretch hours? Keep the Assembly out of your publicity stunts,” he wrote on X.
In a pointed jab, Yadav shared a video allegedly showing Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh dozing during the session, captioning it, “Soti sarkar ke sote mantri” (sleeping ministers of a sleeping government). The clip, widely circulated on X, fueled public ridicule and intensified the SP’s narrative of a lethargic BJP regime.

Responding outside the Assembly, Swatantra Dev Singh dismissed Yadav’s taunts as routine opposition tactics. “It’s their job to attack; my job is to serve the poor 24 hours a day with dedication,” he told PTI Videos, defending the Yogi government’s commitment to impartial justice. “In Uttar Pradesh, the law acts without bias—guilty or not, action is taken,” Singh asserted, addressing accusations of governance lapses.
The 24-hour session, a first in UP’s history, was meant to project the BJP’s vision for a developed Uttar Pradesh by 2047. However, Yadav labeled it a “madness” and a distraction from nine years of alleged misgovernance, pointing to issues like power outages, corruption, and deteriorating infrastructure. On X, users echoed Yadav’s sentiments, with some mocking the BJP’s roster ensuring ministers’ presence as evidence of their absence during key discussions.
The verbal clash underscores rising political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, with Yadav leveraging the session to highlight perceived BJP failures ahead of future elections. As the opposition pushes its narrative of a “sleeping government,” the Yogi administration faces pressure to demonstrate tangible progress amidst the spotlight of this controversial session.
