Akhilesh Yadav Responds To Congress-Samajwadi Party Speculation In Lok Sabha

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav clarified that his remarks during a heated exchange in the Lok Sabha were not directed at the Congress, amid speculation of differences between the two opposition parties. Yadav had questioned whether there was a "deal" or "understanding" after he was initially not given an opportunity to speak on the issue of student protests. He later explained that his comments were aimed at the government and the Speaker's handling of the proceedings, not at the Congress party.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when opposition members raised concerns over the treatment of students during protests and demanded a discussion in Parliament. When Yadav sought time to present the Samajwadi Party's position, he expressed frustration after being denied an immediate chance to speak. Addressing Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, he questioned why other sides were allowed to raise their views while his party was not given the same opportunity.

Following the exchange, several political observers interpreted Yadav's remarks as a possible sign of tension between the Samajwadi Party and the Congress, both of which are part of the opposition alliance. However, speaking to reporters later, Yadav rejected the suggestion of any disagreement with the Congress. He said the opposition parties were united in demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the student-related issue.

Sources close to Akhilesh Yadav said the word "deal" was used in reference to the government and the Speaker's approach to the discussion, and not as a criticism of the Congress. Yadav also denied any confrontation with Congress leader K.C. Venugopal inside the House. He maintained that discussions on the matter should proceed only after the Education Minister takes responsibility and resigns from his position.

The opposition has demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the police action against protesting students in Delhi and has questioned the government's response to their concerns. Yadav accused the administration of ignoring student voices and said that if issues affecting young people are not addressed through democratic channels, protests could intensify. He also questioned why the Prime Minister had not made a statement on the matter inside Parliament.

Yadav, who had participated in a Congress-led protest outside the Prime Minister's residence on Tuesday, said opposition leaders were compelled to take their concerns outside Parliament because they believed their demands were not being addressed inside the House. The government, meanwhile, has agreed to a discussion but accused the opposition of delaying proceedings by insisting on the Education Minister's resignation before the debate. The issue continues to fuel political debate between the ruling alliance and opposition parties in Parliament.
