Akhilesh Slams Yogi Govt for Alleged Illegal Mining in Chambal Ravines
Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday accused the Uttar Pradesh government under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of enabling large-scale illegal mining in the Chambal ravines of Etawah, alleging that entire hills have vanished due to rampant environmental destruction. In a scathing post on X, Yadav claimed that government officials, from lower to senior ranks, colluded to facilitate the devastation near the historic Sumer Singh Fort.
Sharing a video showing a partially flattened landscape where hills once stood, Yadav questioned whether these hills had been “transferred” to regions like Basti and Gorakhpur through corrupt practices.
“New officials may come and go, but the hills of Chambal, hacked away and vanished with the spade of corruption, how will those return?” he wrote, criticizing the BJP-led administration’s environmental record. He added, “Paryavaran kahe aaj ka, nahi chahiye BJP (In the name of today’s environment, we don’t need the BJP)!”

The Chambal ravines, known for their unique ecosystem and historical significance, have long faced threats from illegal mining. Yadav’s allegations intensify the political slugfest in Uttar Pradesh, with the SP targeting the BJP over governance and environmental issues ahead of future polls.
The state government has yet to respond to these claims, but the issue underscores growing concerns over unchecked resource exploitation in the region.
