AIMIM Removes Mirza Rahmath Baig From Party, Seeks Resignation As Telangana MLC

AIMIM expels Telangana MLC Rahmath Baig

AIMIM on Saturday expelled Telangana Legislative Council member Mirza Rahmath Baig with immediate effect and directed him to resign from his MLC post. The action comes amid allegations of sexual harassment involving a minor girl, although the party has not officially stated the reason for Baig’s expulsion. The development has drawn attention because Baig represents the Hyderabad local authorities’ constituency in the Telangana Legislative Council and has nearly three years remaining in his current term.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen announced the decision through a post on its official X account shortly after midnight. AIMIM joint secretary SA Hussain Anwar said Baig had been expelled from the party with immediate effect and instructed him to immediately submit his resignation to the chairman of the legislative council. The party's statement did not provide further details about the circumstances leading to the disciplinary action or identify a specific complaint that prompted the decision.

The expulsion comes against the backdrop of allegations of sexual harassment involving a minor. However, the available information does not establish the allegations as proven, and AIMIM has not publicly disclosed whether the disciplinary action was directly connected to any particular complaint or investigation. It is also not immediately clear whether Baig was issued a prior notice or given an opportunity to respond before the party announced his expulsion. The lack of an official explanation from AIMIM has left questions surrounding the precise basis for the action.

Baig, who represents the Hyderabad local authorities’ constituency, could not be reached for comment. He is currently away on an Umrah pilgrimage. His political status is also significant because expulsion from a political party does not by itself automatically amount to resignation from an elected legislative position. AIMIM has specifically asked him to submit his resignation to the chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council, making his next step important in determining whether he continues as an MLC.

Telangana Legislative Council chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy said he had not received Baig’s resignation as of Saturday. “I have not received any resignation from Rahmat Baig so far,” he said. Reddy also stated that AIMIM leaders had indicated they would meet him on Friday evening, but the proposed meeting did not take place. The chairman's comments indicate that, despite the party's direction, Baig had not formally relinquished his legislative position at the time of the latest update.

The development leaves the immediate status of Baig’s council membership unresolved. While AIMIM has made its position clear by expelling him and calling for his resignation, any formal change in his position as an MLC would require the resignation process to be completed through the legislative council. The party has yet to publicly provide detailed grounds for the expulsion, while Baig has not issued a response because he is currently abroad for Umrah. Further developments are expected once he responds to the party's decision or submits any formal resignation.
