AI Errors Mark Wheat As Chana, Tomato, Madhya Pradesh Farmers Pay The Price

AI mislabels wheat as chana, tomato in Madhya Pradesh, costing farmers.

Farmers in parts of Madhya Pradesh are facing mounting losses after an artificial intelligence-based crop identification system allegedly misclassified their produce, incorrectly labeling wheat as chana (gram) and even tomato in official procurement records.

The issue has emerged during the ongoing government procurement season, where digital verification systems are increasingly being used to streamline crop purchases. Several farmers have claimed that when their produce was scanned or uploaded through the AI-enabled system, it was wrongly identified, leading to discrepancies in records and delays or denial of payments.

According to affected cultivators, wheat consignments were in some cases tagged as chana or tomato, creating confusion in procurement categories. Since different crops fall under separate pricing and procurement norms, such errors have reportedly resulted in financial setbacks, with farmers either receiving incorrect rates or being asked to re-verify their produce.

Officials have acknowledged complaints and indicated that technical glitches or limitations in the AI model could be responsible for the misclassification. The system, introduced to improve transparency and reduce manual intervention, relies on image recognition and data inputs, which may not always account for variations in crop appearance due to quality, lighting, or handling conditions.

Agricultural experts point out that while AI-driven solutions can enhance efficiency, their deployment in critical sectors like procurement requires rigorous testing and fallback mechanisms. Errors in classification not only disrupt supply chains but also directly impact farmers’ incomes, particularly for small and marginal growers who depend on timely payments.

The state authorities have reportedly begun reviewing the affected cases and are working to rectify discrepancies in procurement records. Farmers have been advised to report mismatches and seek corrections through designated channels, though many have expressed concern over delays and procedural hurdles.

The episode has reignited debate over the rapid digitisation of agriculture, highlighting the need for stronger safeguards, human oversight, and accountability in technology-driven systems. As Madhya Pradesh continues to adopt digital tools in governance, ensuring accuracy and reliability will remain critical to maintaining trust among the farming community.
