Ahmedabad Set for Olympics 2036, Shah Links Ambition to Commonwealth Success Hosting
After Commonwealth Games, city eyes historic Olympic hosting.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday expressed strong confidence that Ahmedabad will secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympic Games, positioning the city as a future global sporting hub. His statement comes close on the heels of Ahmedabad officially being awarded the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a major milestone in the city’s transformation into a leading centre for international sports.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the Sansad Khel Mahotsav at the newly built Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in the Naranpura area, Shah told the audience that the people of Ahmedabad should prepare to welcome the Olympics in 2036. He said that before hosting the Olympics, the city will organise nearly a dozen national and international sporting competitions, including the prestigious Commonwealth Games in 2030, further strengthening its sporting infrastructure and experience.
The Union Minister noted that the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, located within his Gandhinagar Lok Sabha Constituency, has been constructed at an estimated cost of ₹800 crore. He added that several other large-scale sports facilities are currently under development, including the ambitious Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in the Motera area. These projects, he said, reflect the Government’s long-term commitment to sports development.

Shah also appealed to sportspersons from Gujarat to work towards making the state the highest medal-winning region in the country by the time the Olympics are held. Expressing optimism about India’s global sporting future, he said he was confident that India would feature among the top five nations in the overall medal tally if the Olympics are hosted in Ahmedabad in 2036.
Highlighting the Government’s support for sports, Shah said Indian athletes are achieving greater international success due to a significant increase in sports funding. He noted that the national sports budget has risen from ₹800 crore in 2014 to ₹4,000 crore in 2025 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Later in the day, Shah also inaugurated the Ahmedabad Shopping Festival organised by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation at Sindhu Bhavan Road.
