Ahmedabad Sessions Court Disrupted by Petitioner Throwing Slippers at Judge
Angry petitioner attacks after case dismissal in Ahmedabad.
A dramatic incident unfolded in the Ahmedabad Sessions Court when an enraged petitioner threw his slippers at a judge during a hearing, echoing a similar attack on Chief Justice of India BR Gavai just a week prior. The outburst stemmed from the court’s dismissal of the petitioner’s appeal against the acquittal of four individuals in a 1997 assault case, leaving the man visibly distraught.
Inspector PH Bhati of Karanj Police Station told PTI, “The petitioner, upset over the dismissal, threw a shoe at the judge but was quickly restrained by court staff.” The judge, unharmed, chose not to press charges and instructed staff to release the man, though police detained him briefly for questioning. The court session continued after the disruption, with the petitioner seated under supervision.
The case originated from a 1997 incident in Gomtipur, Gujarat, where the petitioner, struck by a cricket ball while shopping, clashed physically with four young men. He filed a complaint at Gomtipur Police Station, charging them with assault involving a weapon. A chargesheet was submitted, but the Metro Court acquitted the accused on February 15, 2017. The petitioner’s appeal, filed on May 19, 2017, was rejected by the Sessions Court on October 13, 2025, prompting his disruptive behavior.

The Gujarat Judicial Services Association issued a resolution condemning the incident, stating, “Attacks on courts undermine judicial independence and democracy. We urge the State Government and police to implement stringent security measures for judicial officers and court premises.” This call for action reflects growing concerns over courtroom safety, especially following the October 6, 2025, incident at the Supreme Court, where advocate Rakesh Kishore threw a shoe at CJI Gavai, shouting about “insults to Sanatan Dharma.” The shoe missed, and Kishore was swiftly removed by security.
Data from the National Judicial Data Grid shows a 15% rise in reported courtroom disruptions in India from 2023 to 2025. The Ahmedabad incident has sparked demands for enhanced security protocols, including mandatory screenings and increased police presence in courts. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to assess the incident further, with a report expected within days.
