Agra Road Collapse Draws Samajwadi Leader’s Attention To Civic Infrastructure

A section of road in Agra's Kamla Nagar locality caved in on Friday, creating a several-feet-deep pit and prompting authorities to close the affected stretch to traffic. No injuries were reported in the incident, but the sudden collapse raised concerns among residents about road safety during the monsoon. The incident also became a site of political protest after Samajwadi Party leader Nitin Kohli climbed into the pit using a ladder.

Standing inside the collapsed section, Kohli criticised the authorities over what he described as repeated road failures during the rainy season. He alleged corruption in development works and used the terms "Gaddha Nagari" and "road to Pataal" while questioning the condition of roads in the city. Residents also expressed concern that the collapse could have resulted in a serious accident if a vehicle had been passing through the area when the road gave way.

The Agra incident comes days after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took action against the concessionaire responsible for the newly opened Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway. Parts of the 63-km carriageway had developed cracks and suffered erosion along the edges, leading to repair work and traffic diversions. The problems were reported soon after the expressway was opened, prompting the highway authority to investigate the construction and maintenance concerns.

According to NHAI officials, the project director has been suspended and debarred from the company's operations, while the leader of the independent engineering team has also been suspended. The construction agency has been served a show-cause notice and asked to explain the reasons behind the cracks and erosion reported on the highway. Repair work was initiated after the problems were identified, with diversions put in place to minimise inconvenience to commuters.

The Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway was constructed at a reported cost of Rs 4,200 crore by Agra-based PNC Infratech Limited. The expressway was inaugurated on July 13 by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The NHAI action followed complaints and observations regarding gaps, slippages and erosion on parts of the newly opened road.

The Agra road collapse has now added to concerns over the condition and durability of roads during the monsoon season. While no injuries were reported in the Kamla Nagar incident, the collapse has prompted questions about road construction and maintenance in the city. Authorities have closed the affected stretch, while the broader concerns raised over infrastructure quality remain a matter of public and political attention.
