After Ayodhya Row, Badrinath Temple Donation Theft Claims Trigger Official Probe And Scrutiny

Authorities investigate donation theft allegations at Badrinath Temple officially.

The Badri-Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC) has ordered a formal inquiry into allegations of irregularities in the handling of donations at the Badrinath Temple, following claims circulated on social media regarding the alleged misappropriation of cash offerings made by devotees. The development comes amid heightened public scrutiny of donation management at major religious institutions after the recent controversy surrounding alleged embezzlement linked to the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. Authorities, however, have clarified that no theft or embezzlement has been officially established in the Badrinath case, with the investigation still at a preliminary stage.

According to BKTC President Hemant Dwivedi, the committee constituted an inquiry panel after allegations surfaced online claiming that temple donations had been mishandled. The committee has sought explanations from employees whose names have been mentioned in connection with the allegations. Dwivedi also dismissed speculation circulating on social media that one of the individuals named was his personal secretary, clarifying that the person concerned is a regular employee of the temple committee. He asserted that the investigation would be conducted impartially and warned that "no one will be spared" if any wrongdoing is established, regardless of the individual's position.

The allegations were reportedly raised by a social organisation, Bhairav Sena Sangathan, which claimed that a temple employee was involved in the alleged misuse of donations. The organisation has demanded a thorough investigation, including the examination of CCTV footage and other records, to verify the claims. In response, the BKTC has initiated an internal probe to determine whether there is any evidence supporting the allegations and to ensure that the handling of devotees' contributions remains transparent and accountable.

BKTC Chief Executive Officer Sohan Singh Rangad said the inquiry committee will examine CCTV recordings, financial records and other relevant documents while also recording statements from officials and employees associated with the matter. Once the investigation is complete, the panel will submit a detailed report to the committee. Rangad stated that if the inquiry uncovers any financial irregularities or misuse of donations, those responsible will face legal action under the provisions of the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee Act, 1939.

Even before the controversy gained attention, the BKTC had introduced stricter monitoring measures across its financial operations. The committee recently issued fresh guidelines to strengthen oversight of donation collection centres, treasury and accounts sections, puja booking counters, guest houses and other revenue-generating units under its administration. These enhanced procedures apply not only to Badrinath Temple but also to all temples managed by the committee, with the objective of improving financial transparency and ensuring proper management of devotees' offerings.

The committee has urged devotees to refrain from sharing or acting on unverified information while the inquiry is underway and to await the official findings. At present, authorities have emphasised that no theft or embezzlement has been confirmed, and the allegations remain under investigation. The outcome of the inquiry will determine whether any disciplinary or legal action is warranted, with officials reiterating that any decision will be based solely on the evidence collected during the probe.
