Acharya Devvrat Sworn In As Maharashtra Governor

Former Gujarat Governor Devvrat takes oath in Sanskrit at Mumbai Raj Bhavan.

Acharya Devvrat, the incumbent Governor of Gujarat, took oath as the Governor of Maharashtra on Monday, adding the responsibility to his existing duties. The ceremony, held at Raj Bhavan here, was administered by Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar. Devvrat, aged 66, recited the oath in Sanskrit, underscoring his scholarly background in Hindi, history, and a doctorate in naturopathy and yogic sciences. He has served as Gujarat's governor since 2019, appointed by President Ram Nath Kovind.

The appointment follows President Droupadi Murmu's directive last week, after C.P. Radhakrishnan stepped down from his Maharashtra gubernatorial role upon election as India's vice-president. Radhakrishnan, a BJP veteran from Tamil Nadu, had assumed the position in 2024 amid political turbulence in the state. Devvrat's dual role aims to ensure continuity in Maharashtra's ceremonial functions until a permanent appointment.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with cabinet ministers, senior bureaucrats, and police officials, attended the swearing-in, reflecting the event's significance. Fadnavis, leading the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP Mahayuti coalition since December 2024, extended congratulations, emphasising Devvrat's wisdom in guiding the state's development.

Devvrat's tenure coincides with Maharashtra's preparations for upcoming local elections and infrastructure projects. Known for promoting wellness initiatives in Gujarat, he is expected to advocate similar programmes in the industrial powerhouse state, home to Mumbai's financial hub.
