A Routine Night Patrol, a Parked Auto and a Shocking Discovery — Karnataka's Most Extraordinary Murder Arrest
Karnataka police detained two suspects for suspicious behaviour hours before discovering a nearby murder.
In a remarkable twist in crime investigation, Karnataka Police once had suspects in custody even before they realised a murder had taken place. The case dates back to the night of the Banashankari festival in Badami, when two men sitting in a parked autorickshaw around 4 am raised suspicion during routine patrolling. Their inconsistent answers led officers to detain them for questioning.
Hours later, news emerged of a brutal murder in the vicinity, leaving the police stunned as they connected the dots. The suspects they had picked up earlier were now linked to the crime, highlighting how alert policing and instinct can play a crucial role in solving cases. What initially seemed like a routine check turned into a breakthrough moment in the investigation.
Badami, a historic town once ruled by the Chalukya dynasty, is known for its ancient rock-cut cave temples and attracts massive crowds during the Banashankari Amma festival. With nearly 30–40 lakh devotees attending, the festival also becomes a hotspot for petty crimes like pickpocketing and theft. To manage the situation, police forces from multiple districts are deployed every year.

During such large gatherings, officers are trained to remain vigilant, often questioning suspicious individuals to prevent crimes before they occur. In this case, that vigilance paid off unexpectedly, as the detained individuals were later found to be connected to a much more serious offence than initially suspected.
The case has resurfaced after the recent arrest of Kiran Kumar, the alleged mastermind behind the Sumithramma murder, who had been absconding since 2023. His arrest has brought renewed attention to the decade-old investigation, showcasing how persistence and early police action can eventually lead to justice.
