84 Inmates Complete Skill Training at Thane Central Jail

Prisoners gain certificates in vocational courses; a female inmate also earns a BA degree.

Eighty-four inmates of Thane Central Jail received certificates for completing various skill development programs aimed at facilitating their reintegration into society, prison officials announced on Monday. The initiative, celebrated during a Sunday event, also saw a female inmate honored for earning her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, marking a significant milestone in her rehabilitation journey.

The skill training programs, organized by the prison administration, covered diverse areas such as bakery production, decorative wall painting, computer training, two-wheeler repair, embroidery, and beauty care. Atulchandra Kulkarni, a member of the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT), Mumbai, and chief guest at the event, emphasized the transformative potential of these initiatives. “The skills and certificates acquired through this training will help you reintegrate into society,” Kulkarni told the inmates, urging them to seize such opportunities during incarceration.

The programs are designed to equip inmates with employable skills, fostering self-confidence and preparing them for a fresh start post-release. Jail officials noted that such initiatives not only enhance vocational capabilities but also promote personal growth, reducing recidivism by providing inmates with viable career paths. The felicitation of the female inmate for her academic achievement further highlighted the prison’s commitment to holistic rehabilitation.
