80-Year-Old Uttarakhand Man Dies After Fall While Responding To SIR Objection

An 80-year-old man died at the Kaladhungi tehsil office in Nainital district after he apparently lost his balance while descending the stairs of the two-storey building. Ibne Hasan, a resident of Ward No. 4 in Kaladhungi, had visited the office to respond to an objection concerning his inclusion in the electoral roll under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.

Hasan had completed the required formalities and submitted his reply before the incident, according to officials and his relatives. The tehsil complex was crowded as Monday was the last day for filing replies and disposing of objections under the electoral roll revision process. While leaving the building, Hasan apparently fell on the stairs, prompting people at the complex to rush him to the Community Health Centre in Kaladhungi.

Doctors at the health centre declared Hasan dead after he was brought there. His grandson Saddam Hussain said the elderly man had become anxious after receiving the notice and had never previously visited the tehsil office. However, his relatives maintained that he had completed the required procedure before the incident and questioned the need for elderly residents to navigate the stairs at the two-storey government building.

The exact cause of Hasan’s death has not been officially established, as no post-mortem examination was conducted. Senior Sub-Inspector Pankaj Joshi confirmed that Hasan’s relatives took the body home without an inquest or autopsy. He also noted that the hospital had not sent police any official intimation regarding the case.

Kaladhungi Tehsildar Pooja Sharma confirmed that Hasan had filed his response and that his name had been retained in the electoral roll. She also clarified that the incident occurred after the electoral process concerning his objection had been completed. No official has linked Hasan’s death to the electoral notice or the accessibility of the tehsil building.

The incident has nevertheless prompted concerns among residents and Hasan’s family about access to government offices for senior citizens, particularly when official procedures require them to appear in person. Relatives questioned why elderly people were required to climb and descend stairs to complete such formalities. Authorities had not announced any inquiry into the incident at the time of reporting.
