65-Year-Old Man Killed In Boulder Strike Near Kedarnath Amid Landslides

A 65-year-old man was killed after being struck by falling boulders near the Cheerbasa Helipad in Kedarnath on Sunday, officials said. The incident occurred amid rain and landslides in the region, which have also affected movement along the pilgrimage route.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, boulders rolled down from a hillside near the Cheerbasa Helipad and struck the man. He died on the spot following the impact. The victim was identified as Madan Mohan Tiwari, a resident of Ukhimath.

The incident came as the Kedarnath pilgrimage was temporarily suspended because of adverse weather conditions. Police said debris had blocked parts of the pilgrimage route following rain, making movement along the track unsafe for pilgrims and other travellers.

Officials advised travellers heading towards Kedarnath to halt at Sonprayag and Gaurikund until further instructions. Those returning from the pilgrimage route have been asked to stop at Jangalchatti. Authorities have urged pilgrims not to proceed beyond the designated points while clearance work is underway.

The administration has asked all pilgrims to wait until the route is cleared and official permission is given to resume movement. The precautionary measures have been put in place to prevent further incidents amid continuing rain, landslides and falling debris along the route.

Officials said pilgrim movement will resume only after weather conditions improve and the affected stretches are cleared for safe passage. Authorities have also urged visitors to follow official advisories and avoid travelling through blocked or vulnerable sections of the route until conditions normalise.
