594-km Ganga Expressway Inaugurated, Travel Time Drops to 6 Hours
Ganga Expressway cuts Meerut-Prayagraj travel from 12 to 6 hours.
The ambitious Ganga Expressway is set to significantly transform road travel across northern India, with authorities highlighting that the 6-lane corridor could enable vehicles to cover nearly 600 kilometres in just about six hours once fully operational.
Planned as one of India’s longest expressways, the project will stretch approximately 594 km, connecting Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the eastern part of the state. The access-controlled highway is being developed to boost high-speed connectivity, reduce travel time, and improve logistics efficiency across key economic regions.
Designed initially as a 6-lane expressway with provisions to expand to 8 lanes, the corridor will allow vehicles to travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h. Once completed, the journey between Meerut and Prayagraj—currently taking 10–12 hours—could be reduced to around six hours, offering a major upgrade in inter-city mobility.

The expressway will pass through multiple districts including Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj. It is also expected to integrate with other major road networks, strengthening connectivity to the National Capital Region and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
A key highlight of the project is a 3.5-km-long airstrip designed to facilitate emergency aircraft landings, including for the Indian Air Force. Such features underscore the strategic importance of the corridor beyond civilian transport, adding a layer of national security utility.
Officials say the Ganga Expressway is likely to spur economic development along its route by improving freight movement, attracting industrial investment, and generating employment. As construction progresses, the project is being closely watched as a benchmark for large-scale infrastructure development in India.
