50 Years On, Arunachal Vows Big Leap by 2047!

Arunachal celebrates 50 years of its Assembly with a pledge to become a developed state by 2047.

Arunachal Pradesh celebrated the golden jubilee of its Legislative Assembly on Monday, with Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein urging lawmakers to pledge towards making the state a developed region by 2047. Speaking during a special session in Itanagar, Mein emphasized the state government’s commitment under Chief Minister Pema Khandu to harness Arunachal’s potential through reforms focused on clean, healthy, educated, empowered, and beautiful governance.

“The last 50 years reflect the toil of former chief ministers and lawmakers, driving massive development,” Mein stated, highlighting ongoing and completed projects aimed at accelerating progress in the northeastern state. He noted initiatives like Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, which honored over 220 unsung freedom fighters, and the Tiranga Yatra, underscoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to recognize national contributors.

The session, marking the Assembly’s journey since its inception on August 18, 1975, with 33 members, was initiated by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona. He detailed the Assembly’s 137 sessions over 457 days, with 18 Speakers and 20 Deputy Speakers, and praised its disruption-free proceedings, a rarity in India. “This House plays development politics, contributing to its unique growth,” Sona remarked.

Legislators across parties, including NCP’s Toko Tatung, PPA’s Oken Tayeng, NPP’s Thangwang Wangham, and Congress’ Kumar Waii, lauded the Assembly’s evolution from a remote tribal region to a strategically vital state. Waii, however, cautioned that equitable development across constituencies is essential for achieving a ‘Viksit Arunachal.’

The event, attended by former chief ministers, including P K Thungon, and other former leaders, featured a documentary on the Assembly’s history, a Golden Jubilee souvenir, and a commemorative journal released by Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik. The celebrations, which began on July 3, 2025, with Parnaik unveiling a commemorative plaque, reflect Arunachal’s democratic resilience and aspirations for a sustainable future.
