5-Year-Old’s Plea to PM Modi on Bengaluru Traffic Goes Viral

Arya’s letter sparks hope for change

A heartfelt handwritten letter by five-year-old Arya Chatterjee to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to address Bengaluru’s crippling traffic and poor road conditions, has taken social media by storm, amassing over 5.5 lakh views.

Shared by her father, Abhiroop Chatterjee, on X with the caption, “PM is visiting Bangalore. My 5-year-old girl sees it as her chance to finally fix traffic,” the letter was penned during Modi’s visit to inaugurate the Namma Metro’s Yellow Line on August 10, 2025. “Narendra Modi ji, there is lot of traffic. We get late to school and office. The road is very bad. Please help,” Arya wrote, signing off with her name, age, and charming doodles of a heart and flower.

The letter, posted on August 10, resonated with Bengaluru’s residents, who face daily gridlocks and pothole-ridden roads. X users like @MayyankK3246 expressed hope that Modi would meet Arya, while @scmitra shared a similar story of his daughter’s letter to the President about Mumbai’s noise pollution, which prompted police action. Others, like @KariaJeet, vented frustration, stating, “I pay ₹3 lakh in taxes, and all I get is roads like a highway to hell.” The post sparked a broader conversation about Bengaluru’s infrastructure, with some blaming both BJP and Congress for neglecting civic issues.

Modi’s visit included launching the 19.15-km Yellow Line from RV Road to Bommasandra, costing ₹7,160 crore, and flagging off the Bengaluru–Belagavi Vande Bharat Express. The metro line, operational from August 11, is expected to ease Electronic City’s congestion, a key concern for commuters like Arya. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah noted the state funds 87% of metro projects, aiming for a 220-km network by 2030. However, with 1.5 crore vehicles and only 3,500 km of motorable roads, Bengaluru’s traffic remains a challenge, exacerbated by 1.2 lakh annual vehicle registrations.

Arya’s letter echoes past appeals, like an 8-year-old’s 2023 note to Modi about a flyover causing school delays, which prompted a response from the PMO. Her plea has renewed calls for a comprehensive mobility plan, with activists like @CivicOp_india on X urging action on roads like Balagere and Panathur. As Bengaluru awaits tangible improvements, Arya’s innocent voice has become a powerful symbol of hope for a city stuck in traffic.
