45 Bodies of Iranian Sailors From Tanker Attack Handed To Embassy by Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka transfers 45 Iranian sailors’ bodies from tanker attack to embassy.

Sri Lankan authorities have formally handed over the bodies of 45 Iranian sailors killed in a recent naval attack in the Indian Ocean to the Iranian Embassy in Colombo, officials said on Friday. The sailors were among crew members of an Iranian naval frigate that was struck and sunk off Sri Lanka’s southern coast in early March, amid escalating hostilities tied to the broader Iran conflict involving the United States and Israel.

The deceased were transported to the embassy after being recovered by Sri Lankan naval personnel and held at facilities near Galle National Hospital. Tehran has repeatedly requested the return of the bodies to arrange funerary rites, and Sri Lankan authorities complied with those diplomatic appeals following due legal and procedural review.

The incident stems from an attack on the Iranian warship IRIS Dena on March 4, 2026, when it was sunk in international waters by a United States Navy submarine, according to defence briefings and naval sources. The attack resulted in significant loss of life, marking one of the most deadly maritime confrontations tied to the expanding regional conflict beyond the Middle East’s traditional theatres.

Sri Lankan military and rescue teams conducted extensive operations in the aftermath, retrieving the remains of dozens of sailors amid challenging ocean conditions. Some Iranian survivors were rescued and treated by Sri Lankan forces, while others remained missing or were recovered later.

Diplomatic engagement between Colombo and Tehran has remained active since the incident, with Sri Lanka emphasising its humanitarian and legal obligations under international law. The government has sought to manage the situation with sensitivity, balancing global pressures and its longstanding bilateral relations with both Iran and the United States.

The handover of the 45 bodies represents a significant step in addressing the humanitarian aftermath of the attack, though broader geopolitical tensions persist. Analysts say the episode underscores the far‑reaching impacts of the conflict on neutral states and international maritime law, prompting calls for de‑escalation and adherence to conventions governing naval engagements.
