35 Injured As Bus Overturns After Collision With Car On NH-31 In Bihar’s Katihar

Bus overturns after collision in Katihar, Bihar; 35 injured.

At least 35 passengers were injured after a speeding bus overturned following a head-on collision with a car on National Highway 31 in Bihar’s Katihar district early Saturday morning. The accident occurred near Jurabganj under the Kodha Police Station area, triggering panic and a large-scale rescue operation by local residents and police personnel.

According to officials, the passenger bus was carrying around 50 people, many of whom were migrant labourers travelling from Nalanda district to various destinations in West Bengal. The bus reportedly collided with a speeding car coming from the opposite direction, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The impact led to the bus overturning in the middle of the highway, leaving several passengers trapped inside the wreckage.

Eyewitnesses and local villagers immediately rushed to the spot and assisted in rescue efforts before police arrived. Station House Officer Pankaj Anand and his team reached the scene within minutes and, along with local residents, broke open bus windows to pull out injured passengers. Emergency services later transported all 35 injured individuals to the Community Health Centre in Kodha using ambulances and private vehicles.

Medical officials stated that 12 passengers with critical injuries, including severe head trauma and internal injuries, were referred to Purnea Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment. The driver of the car involved in the collision also sustained serious injuries and was shifted to Purnea for specialised care. Authorities said several other passengers were treated for minor injuries and discharged after first aid.

The accident caused major disruption on NH-31, with long traffic queues forming on both sides of the highway as emergency operations continued. Police and recovery teams used cranes and a JCB machine to remove the overturned bus and clear debris from the road. After nearly two hours of work, normal traffic movement was restored.

Police have seized both the bus and the car involved in the collision and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including possible overspeeding and traffic violations. Officials have urged motorists to exercise caution on highways, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and traffic conditions can increase accident risks.
