3,000 Gas Cylinders Swept into River After Flood Breaches HPCL Plant in Raigad

Floodwater breaches HPCL plant wall, sweeping thousands of gas cylinders downstream.

Around 3,000 gas cylinders were swept away from the HPCL Patalganga LPG Bottling Plant after heavy rain caused floodwater to breach the facility. The cylinders were carried by strong currents into the Patalganga River and Kharpada Creek, creating an unusual and potentially dangerous situation. Videos from the area showed thousands of cylinders floating in the water as residents watched and recorded the scene from a bridge.

Officials said torrential rainfall caused the plant’s protection wall to collapse, allowing floodwater to enter the premises directly. The powerful flow of water then swept away cylinders stored at the facility and carried them into nearby waterways. The administration said the cylinders were dispersed across the Patalganga River and Kharpada Creek as the heavy rainfall continued to affect parts of Raigad district.

Videos of the incident showed large numbers of gas cylinders moving downstream with the strong current. Several people gathered on a bridge to watch the unusual sight and record videos, which later circulated widely on social media. The scale of the incident drew attention as authorities began assessing the situation and working to locate the cylinders that had been washed away from the plant.

The administration has warned that some of the cylinders carried into the river may still contain gas, creating possible safety risks if they are mishandled. Residents have been advised not to open, damage or attempt to use any cylinders they find. Officials have urged people to immediately report such discoveries and hand the cylinders over to the authorities or the company.

Raigad Collector Kishan Javle appealed to residents who find floating or stranded cylinders in the Patalganga River or nearby areas to immediately contact the concerned authorities. He asked citizens to cooperate with recovery efforts and ensure that the cylinders are safely returned to HPCL. The administration has not yet provided details on how many of the approximately 3,000 cylinders have been recovered.

The incident occurred amid heavy rainfall in Raigad, which caused flooding and damaged the protective wall of the LPG bottling facility. Authorities are continuing to monitor the affected areas and assess the impact of the flooding. Recovery efforts are expected to continue as officials work to locate the missing cylinders and prevent any safety incidents involving those that may still contain gas.
