23 Hospitalised in Andhra Village After Suspected Food Poisoning Incident

23 hospitalised in Andhra village after eating snacks from local stall.

At least 23 people were hospitalised in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada district after reportedly suffering from food poisoning following the consumption of deep-fried snacks from a roadside stall. Several others also complained of mild symptoms, prompting health authorities to launch an investigation into the incident in Duggudurru village.

According to officials, the affected individuals developed symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fever within hours of eating snacks purchased from a local roadside bajji stall. The sudden onset of illness led to panic in the village, with family members rushing the patients to nearby primary health centres and district hospitals for emergency treatment.

Medical authorities confirmed that hospital admissions began on Sunday evening and continued into the following day as more cases emerged. Dr. Y. Supriya, Medical Officer at Nudurupadu Primary Health Centre, said around 32 patients were treated in total, of whom 23 required intravenous antibiotics and supportive care. She added that most patients reported having consumed a local deep-fried snack known as “challa punugulu” before falling ill.

Health officials from the district administration visited the affected village shortly after the incident and collected food and water samples from the stall for laboratory testing. Authorities have also initiated a detailed inquiry to determine whether the outbreak was caused by contaminated ingredients, improper food handling practices or unhygienic preparation conditions at the roadside eatery.

The District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) inspected treatment facilities and directed medical staff to ensure continuous care for the patients. Officials have also intensified surveillance in the village to identify any additional cases, while urging healthcare teams to respond quickly to new reports of illness. Doctors confirmed that all admitted patients are currently stable and responding to treatment.

Health experts have advised residents to exercise caution during the monsoon season, warning against consuming food from unhygienic sources and recommending boiled or treated drinking water. Authorities also encouraged individuals experiencing symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting or fever to seek immediate medical attention. Meanwhile, the stall owner has reportedly shut down operations, and the final cause of the outbreak will be confirmed after laboratory analysis of collected samples.
