2022 Salman Rushdie Attack Case: Accused Convicted After Terrorism Trial Verdict Delivered

A man has been convicted of federal terrorism charges in connection with the 2022 stabbing attack on author Salman Rushdie, after a jury found Hadi Matar guilty of all charges, including engaging in an act of transnational terrorism. The verdict came after just a few hours of deliberation, bringing a major development in the high-profile case involving the internationally acclaimed writer. The attack took place in August 2022 at an amphitheatre in New York state, where Rushdie was scheduled to speak about the safety of writers. As he was preparing to address the audience, Matar rushed onto the stage and attacked him with a knife.
Prosecutors said Rushdie was stabbed multiple times during the assault, suffering severe injuries that resulted in the loss of sight in his right eye. During the trial, prosecutors argued that Matar was motivated by a decades-old threat against Rushdie linked to his 1988 novel "The Satanic Verses". They said the attacker was influenced by a 1989 religious decree issued by then-Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, which called for Rushdie’s death over the controversial book. The jury’s decision found Matar guilty of the federal terrorism-related charges brought against him.
Prosecutors described the attack as an act driven by extremist ideology and said the case demonstrated the international reach of threats against individuals targeted for their writings and public views. Following the verdict, John Eisenberg, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, said the conviction represented justice for the attack on Rushdie. "His brutal attack on Mr. Rushdie during a peaceful speaking event is a chilling reminder of the global reach of Iranian terrorism," Eisenberg said in a statement. Iran’s government has denied any involvement in the stabbing. Tehran has previously rejected accusations linking it directly to the attack, while maintaining that Rushdie’s writings had offended many Muslims.
