15-Year-Old Girl Dies by Suicide, Family Accuses School of Mental Harassment
Family alleges school harassment after a Class 10 student died by suicide in Greater Noida West.
A 15-year-old Class 10 student named Kanishka Solanki died by suicide on December 23, 2025, after jumping from the eighth floor of her residential building in Greater Noida West. The incident occurred shortly after the girl was allegedly reprimanded by school authorities at Gagan Public School for bringing a mobile phone to the exam hall on December 22, where she was accused of using AI tools to assist during a pre-board examination. Police responded to the scene, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination, with no suicide note found during initial inquiries.
The girl's father, Ravi Ranjan, has filed a police complaint accusing the school administration, principal, and two specific teachers of mental harassment, public humiliation, and abetment to suicide. According to the family, Kanishka faced severe scolding and ongoing distress from the classroom reprimand, which left her deeply traumatized. The complaint seeks an FIR against the school staff, highlighting claims that the confrontation involved aggressive insults and contributed directly to her decision. This has intensified scrutiny on the school's disciplinary approach during the critical pre-board period.
The school principal has strongly denied the allegations of harassment, stating that the student was only given a standard warning in line with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) rules about the serious consequences of cheating, which could include a multi-year ban from board exams. The principal described the interaction as brief, conducted appropriately at the reception with parents informed immediately, and emphasized that no verbal abuse or prolonged humiliation occurred. Police are currently investigating the matter, including reviewing statements and potential CCTV footage from the school and gathering accounts from teachers and witnesses to determine the facts.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the mounting mental health pressures faced by students in India's competitive education system, particularly during exam seasons. Incidents like this underscore the need for schools to handle disciplinary matters with greater sensitivity and to provide adequate counseling support, as academic stress, fear of failure, and perceived humiliation continue to contribute to rising student distress across the country. Authorities are expected to conclude their probe soon amid calls for preventive measures to safeguard vulnerable adolescents.
