15 Indians Killed In Vietnam Boat Tragedy Repatriated To India
Victims' mortal remains returned home after Vietnam tragedy.
The mortal remains of 15 Indian nationals who lost their lives in a tragic boat accident near Phu Quoc Island in southern Vietnam have been repatriated to India. According to the Embassy of India in Hanoi, the remains departed Ho Chi Minh City on a Vietnam Airlines flight and are expected to arrive in Mumbai late Monday evening. The victims will subsequently be transported to their respective hometowns in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with the state governments coordinating the final leg of the journey.
The Indian Embassy and the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City expressed gratitude to the Vietnamese authorities for their extensive support following the tragedy. In a statement shared on X, the Embassy thanked the administration of the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone, An Giang Province, the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other agencies for their assistance in rescue, relief and repatriation efforts. The mission also acknowledged the condolences and prayers received from the people of Vietnam, describing their support as a source of strength during a period of immense grief.
One Indian national who survived the accident continues to receive medical treatment. The Embassy confirmed that the injured passenger successfully underwent a medical procedure on Sunday and was later shifted to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for further care. Family members of the survivor have since arrived in Vietnam to be by his side. Indian diplomatic officials are closely monitoring his condition and coordinating with local authorities to ensure necessary assistance.

Vietnamese authorities have also initiated legal proceedings in connection with the incident. Police in An Giang Province have detained 57-year-old boat captain Nguyen Hong Hai, alleging legal violations related to the operation of the tourist vessel. Investigators are examining the circumstances that led to the boat capsizing as part of an ongoing criminal inquiry. Officials are expected to determine whether safety regulations or operational protocols were violated before the accident.
According to preliminary reports, the tourist boat was carrying around 32 Indian passengers, including 17 from Tamil Nadu, while others hailed from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala. The vessel overturned while cruising in waters south of Phu Quoc, one of Vietnam’s most popular tourist destinations. Rescue teams, emergency responders and local residents launched an extensive search and rescue operation immediately after the accident. The incident has prompted renewed attention to maritime safety standards for tourist vessels operating in the region.
