13.3km Mumbai-Pune Expressway Link Opens, Bypassing Khandala Ghat Stretch

Missing link bypasses ghat, cuts Mumbai-Pune travel by 30 minutes.

The long-awaited “missing link” project on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway has been opened to traffic, significantly improving connectivity between the two cities and reducing travel time by up to 30 minutes. The new stretch bypasses the challenging ghat section, offering a faster and safer route for commuters.

The infrastructure upgrade, developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, is designed to ease congestion on one of India’s busiest expressways. The ghat section, known for sharp curves, steep gradients, and frequent traffic snarls, has historically been a bottleneck, particularly during weekends and holiday seasons.

With the commissioning of the missing link, vehicles can now avoid the older, winding routes through the Western Ghats. The project includes modern engineering features such as tunnels, viaducts, and improved road alignments, aimed at enhancing both travel efficiency and road safety. Authorities expect a noticeable reduction in accidents along the previously hazardous stretch.

Officials stated that the new corridor will not only cut travel time but also lead to fuel savings and lower vehicular emissions due to smoother traffic flow. The improved connectivity is also expected to benefit logistics and commercial transport between Mumbai and Pune, two of Maharashtra’s key economic hubs.

The opening comes as part of broader efforts by the state government to modernize transport infrastructure and support growing traffic demand. The Mumbai–Pune Expressway remains a critical arterial route, and the addition of the missing link is seen as a major milestone in its evolution.

With traffic now being gradually diverted to the new alignment, authorities will continue to monitor conditions and make adjustments as needed. Commuters are advised to follow updated traffic guidelines and signage while using the newly opened stretch.
