13 Indian Seafarers Face Black Sea Crisis; India Races to Evacuate Crew

Indian authorities are coordinating with Ukrainian officials to ensure the safety of 13 Indian seafarers aboard a merchant vessel anchored at the Black Sea port of Chornomorsk, following a series of Russian drone and missile attacks in the area. The Indian embassy in Kyiv said it is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with relevant authorities. The vessel, MV Amir1, a Tanzania-flagged cargo ship, has been anchored at Chornomorsk port since July 8. The ship has a crew of 15 members, including 13 Indian nationals and two Iranian citizens. Concerns over the safety of those onboard increased after recent attacks targeted areas around the Ukrainian port.

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI) shared a video on Wednesday showing smoke rising over the Chornomorsk port area near MV Amir1, prompting concerns among the families of crew members and maritime organisations. Following the reports, the Indian embassy in Kyiv confirmed that it was aware of the situation involving the vessel. “A situation regarding MV Amir1 with Indian seafarers onboard has been brought to our attention. We attach the highest priority to this and are in constant touch with all concerned to ensure safety and security of all Indians onboard,” the embassy said in a statement shared on social media.

The latest incident comes amid growing risks for merchant vessels operating in the Black Sea, where attacks linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict have increased threats to commercial shipping routes. Ports and maritime infrastructure in Ukraine have repeatedly faced strikes since the start of the war, affecting global trade and shipping operations. Indian authorities have also been dealing with the impact of previous attacks on merchant vessels in the region. Five Indian seafarers have died and two others have been reported missing following recent Russian and Ukrainian strikes on commercial ships in the Black Sea.

The Ministry of External Affairs and Indian diplomatic missions have been monitoring developments involving Indian citizens working in conflict-affected areas. Officials have maintained contact with foreign governments and shipping companies to provide assistance and ensure the safety of Indian nationals. The Black Sea remains a critical maritime route for the movement of agricultural commodities, energy products and other goods. However, ongoing military operations have created significant challenges for shipping companies, with vessels facing risks from missile attacks, drone strikes and security restrictions. Chornomorsk, located near the major Ukrainian port city of Odesa, has been an important hub for maritime trade.

The port has been repeatedly targeted during the conflict, particularly as Russia and Ukraine continue military operations affecting infrastructure across the region. The Indian seafarers aboard MV Amir1 remain the focus of ongoing safety efforts. Authorities have not provided further details about the vessel’s condition or whether any damage was caused by the recent attacks. India’s diplomatic mission in Ukraine has assured that it is treating the matter as a priority and is working with all concerned parties to safeguard the crew members. Further updates are expected as officials continue to assess the situation and coordinate necessary assistance.
