100 Atal Canteens Now Operational In Delhi, Including One At Delhi University
Delhi reaches 100 Atal Canteens, expanding affordable food access.
The Delhi government on Sunday inaugurated 25 new Atal Canteens across the national capital, taking the total number of operational outlets under the scheme to 100. The latest canteens were launched on the eighth death anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The initiative provides subsidised meals for Rs 5 and is aimed at making affordable and nutritious food accessible to people from economically weaker sections.
Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the new canteens from the Vishwavidyalaya Metro Station in the presence of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari, Delhi Minister Ashish Sood and other officials. One of the newly opened canteens is located in the Delhi University campus area, providing students and other residents in the university neighbourhood with access to low-cost meals.
The Delhi government stated that the 100 Atal Canteens are serving nearly one lakh people every day. The outlets have been established in areas including JJ clusters, labour colonies, hospitals and university neighbourhoods, with the stated aim of reaching people who require affordable food. The scheme was originally launched on December 25, 2025, on the occasion of Vajpayee’s 100th birth anniversary.

Naidu described the expansion to 100 canteens as a significant initiative focused on public service and support for vulnerable sections of society. He noted that the programme is intended to provide affordable and nutritious meals to poor people, slum residents, labourers and those who come to Delhi from different parts of the country in search of employment. The initiative is positioned as a measure to make basic food more accessible to people across the capital.
Gupta also welcomed the completion of the government’s target of establishing 100 Atal Canteens. She described the initiative as a commitment to ensuring that people can access meals with dignity and specifically pointed to the new outlet near Delhi University. The canteen is expected to benefit students living in hostels and paying guest accommodations who may seek affordable meal options away from their families.
During the inauguration, the visiting guests also had meals at the Atal Canteen and inspected the quality of food and operational arrangements. With all 100 outlets now operational, the Delhi government is focusing on extending the reach of the subsidised meal programme across different sections of the city. The administration has stated that the scheme is intended to combine affordability, nutrition and accessibility for beneficiaries.
