Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in New Delhi, with the two sides discussing bilateral cooperation as well as key geopolitical developments, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia. During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent position in favour of peaceful resolution of ongoing global conflicts.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Lavrov briefed Modi on the progress achieved in various areas of cooperation since the meeting between Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025. The discussions reportedly covered multiple aspects of the long-standing Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.

Sharing details of the interaction on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi said he was pleased to receive the Russian foreign minister and appreciated the update on bilateral engagement. Modi stated that the two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments, particularly the situation in Ukraine and the continuing tensions in West Asia. He reiterated India’s support for diplomatic and peaceful approaches aimed at resolving conflicts.

The meeting comes at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, with the Russia-Ukraine conflict continuing to reshape global diplomatic and economic alignments, while instability in West Asia remains a major international concern. India has maintained a balanced diplomatic stance on these issues, consistently calling for dialogue, diplomacy, and respect for international law while engaging with all major stakeholders.India and Russia continue to share strong cooperation across sectors such as defence, energy, trade, space, and strategic affairs.

Moscow remains one of New Delhi’s key defence and energy partners, while both countries have also worked to strengthen economic and connectivity initiatives despite changing global geopolitical conditions and sanctions-related challenges affecting international trade systems.The latest high-level interaction signals continued engagement between the two countries amid evolving global dynamics. Officials indicated that both sides remain committed to advancing bilateral cooperation while maintaining regular consultations on international developments affecting regional and global stability.
