US Warns Iran — Deception in Negotiations Cost Previous Leaders Their Lives

Washington says killed Iranian leaders deceived the US privately while rejecting peace proposals publicly.

The White House has accused Iranian leadership of misleading the United States during diplomatic negotiations, linking those actions to the deaths of several senior figures amid ongoing conflict. Speaking to reporters, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that certain Iranian leaders were targeted because they had “lied” and prolonged negotiations without genuine intent. Her remarks come at a time of heightened tensions following recent military escalations involving the US and its allies.

The comments followed Iran’s response to fresh US peace proposals, which Tehran described as “unrealistic, illogical and excessive". Iranian officials maintained that their country remains under military pressure and is focused on defending itself rather than engaging in what it views as one-sided negotiations. Esmaeil Baghaei reiterated this stance during a press briefing, emphasising that Iran’s priority is safeguarding its sovereignty amid ongoing hostilities.

Leavitt further claimed that there is a significant gap between Iran’s public statements and its private communications with US officials. According to her, Tehran had privately shown willingness to accept certain US conditions but failed to reflect that position publicly. This discrepancy, she suggested, contributed to a breakdown in trust between the two sides and influenced the course of recent developments in the conflict.

In a particularly strong statement, Leavitt said that some Iranian leaders “are no longer on planet Earth” because of their actions during negotiations. While she did not name individuals directly, the comments come in the backdrop of joint military operations conducted by the United States and Israel targeting Iranian leadership and strategic assets. These strikes have significantly escalated tensions in the region and drawn widespread international attention.

Iran, however, has rejected the US narrative, framing the situation as one of external aggression rather than diplomatic failure. Officials in Tehran argue that the conditions outlined in the US proposals are not viable and fail to account for the country’s security concerns. The divergence in positions underscores the deep mistrust that continues to hinder meaningful dialogue between the two nations.

The latest exchange of statements highlights the fragile state of US-Iran relations and the challenges facing any potential path toward de-escalation. With both sides holding firm to their positions and rhetoric intensifying, prospects for a negotiated resolution remain uncertain. The situation continues to evolve as global observers watch closely for signs of further escalation or a possible return to diplomatic engagement.
