Odisha Faces Severe Heatwave, IMD Forecasts Rain And Thunderstorms Over Next 4 Days
Odisha heatwave continues before expected rain and thunderstorms arrive.
Several parts of Odisha continued to reel under intense heatwave conditions on Friday, with temperatures crossing 41 degrees Celsius in at least eight locations, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast thunderstorms and rainfall over the next four days. According to weather data, Boudh town in western Odisha emerged as the hottest location in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 41.7°C. Sambalpur followed closely at 41.2°C, while Bhubaneswar and Angul both registered highs of 41.1°C, reflecting widespread heat stress across multiple districts.
The IMD reported that hot and humid conditions were likely to persist across large parts of the state on June 6. Districts expected to remain affected by high temperatures include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Despite the ongoing heatwave, meteorological officials have also forecast a shift in weather patterns, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning expected in several southern and interior districts. Areas likely to receive rainfall activity include Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati districts over the next few days.

Weather experts suggest that the combination of high daytime temperatures and incoming moisture-laden winds could lead to unstable atmospheric conditions, increasing the likelihood of localized thunderstorms. Such conditions may bring temporary relief from the heat in some regions, although humidity levels are expected to remain high.
The IMD has advised residents to take precautionary measures during peak afternoon hours, especially in districts experiencing extreme temperatures. Heatwave conditions in Odisha have been a recurring concern during the pre-monsoon season, often affecting daily life, agriculture, and water availability in several regions. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation closely as weather systems develop over the eastern coast, with updates likely as conditions evolve over the coming days.
