Mamata Warns Centre May Impose Lockdown Amid Fuel Crisis, Vows to Fight on in Bengal
Mamata warns of possible nationwide lockdown as fuel supply concerns mount ahead of polls.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday raised concerns over a possible nationwide lockdown amid uncertainties surrounding fuel supply due to the ongoing West Asia conflict. Her remarks came a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled virtual meeting with chief ministers to review the situation.
Addressing a public gathering, Banerjee expressed apprehension that the Centre might impose restrictions similar to those seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. She stated that such a move would not deter her or her party from continuing political activities, particularly in the context of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
Referring to her party’s campaign during the 2021 Assembly elections, which were conducted amid pandemic-related restrictions, Banerjee said she had successfully navigated similar challenges in the past. She emphasized that her party would remain active and continue its political fight regardless of any potential limitations imposed by the Centre.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come at a time when concerns over fuel availability have intensified due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia. The Centre is expected to hold discussions with state leaders to assess preparedness and ensure that supply chains remain stable in the face of global disruptions.
In addition to her comments on a possible lockdown, Banerjee also criticised the Election Commission, alleging a lack of transparency regarding supplementary voter list deletions. She reiterated her demand for greater clarity from the poll body, accusing it of failing to provide complete information.
The developments highlight growing political tensions ahead of key electoral events, with opposition leaders questioning the Centre’s approach to both governance and electoral processes. The outcome of the upcoming meeting between the Prime Minister and chief ministers is expected to provide further clarity on the government’s strategy to address fuel-related concerns.
