A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman tourist from the Czech Republic at Agonda Beach in south Goa, police said on Thursday. The incident occurred on the morning of February 9 at Agonda Cliff, a popular coastal spot known for attracting domestic and international visitors.
According to police officials, the accused allegedly got into an argument with the tourist around 10:15 am before attacking her with fists and a stone. The assault reportedly resulted in grievous injuries. Authorities have not yet disclosed what triggered the confrontation.
A formal complaint was lodged at the Canacona police station on February 10, following which a case was registered under Section 117(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for voluntarily causing grievous hurt. At the time of the complaint, the identity of the accused was unknown, and investigators had only a limited physical description provided by the victim.

“Despite limited inputs, our team launched an intensive investigation,” a senior police official said. The probe was led by Inspector Praveen Gawas under the supervision of Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nilesh Rane. Police tracked the suspect’s movements using field inquiries and technical analysis before identifying him as Rohan Velip, a resident of Benordem in Balli village.
Velip was arrested on Wednesday and allegedly admitted to his involvement during interrogation, the official said. Further investigation is underway. The incident has once again drawn attention to tourist safety in Goa, a state heavily dependent on its international tourism industry, particularly during peak travel seasons.
