Delhi 10/11 Probe: Main Accused Assembled IED Inside Car in Public Parking Lot
Umar assembled deadly IED inside car near historic site.
Investigators have confirmed that Umar Mohammad, alias Umar un-Nabi, the main accused in the devastating blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, calmly assembled the improvised explosive device inside his vehicle while parked in a public parking lot directly adjacent to the iconic national monument.
Detailed analysis of CCTV footage revealed that Umar entered the parking area near Sunehri Masjid at precisely 3:19 pm and remained seated inside his car without stepping out until 6:28 pm — a critical three-hour period that had remained unexplained until now. During this time, he was in continuous communication with his foreign-based handlers, discussing target selection while methodically constructing the bomb in the confined space of the vehicle.
Sources disclosed that the initial plan was to detonate the explosive within the Red Fort complex itself, chosen for its immense symbolic significance. However, the terrorist and his handlers were unaware that the monument remains closed to visitors every Monday, leaving the parking area almost deserted and rendering the original location unsuitable for maximum impact.

Upon realising the error, the handlers immediately instructed Umar to shift the target to the densely crowded Netaji Subhash Marg, the busy thoroughfare flanked by the Red Fort on one side and Chandni Chowk on the other. Once the IED assembly was complete, he drove out of the parking lot and triggered the explosion at 6:52 pm, killing 13 people and injuring 20 others.
This development — that a lethal explosive device was assembled undetected for hours in a high-security zone near one of India’s most guarded heritage sites — has raised grave concerns among security agencies about existing surveillance protocols and the potential vulnerability of national monuments to such calculated acts of terror.
