Canada Offers India LNG and Critical Minerals as Carney Meets PM Modi Amid Middle East Crisis

Carney Offers India LNG, Minerals Deal Amid Qatar Supply Disruption

Mark Carney has positioned Canada as a key energy partner for India, offering to help meet the country’s rapidly growing demand for energy, particularly through supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Speaking during a statement shared alongside Narendra Modi, Carney said Canada is well placed to support India’s long-term energy needs as its consumption continues to rise.

Carney described Canada as an “energy superpower” and highlighted the country’s ability to supply what he called some of the world’s lowest-carbon and most reliable LNG. The fuel is widely used across Asia and Europe for heating, electricity generation and industrial purposes. His remarks come at a time when global energy markets are facing disruptions due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, including supply concerns linked to the ongoing regional conflict.

India’s energy demand is projected to grow sharply over the coming decades as the country expands its economy and industrial capacity. According to estimates cited during the discussion, India’s overall energy consumption could double by 2040. At the same time, the government aims to significantly increase renewable energy capacity to about 500 gigawatts by the end of the decade while also expanding the share of LNG in the national energy mix.

Carney also highlighted Canada’s strong position in the global mining sector, saying the country could support India’s demand for critical minerals required for manufacturing, clean technology and nuclear energy projects. He noted that roughly 40 per cent of the world’s mining companies are listed in Canada, making the country an important player in global resource supply chains.

Meanwhile, Hardeep Singh Puri said India is actively diversifying its energy imports beyond the Middle East to ensure supply security. He emphasised that the government has been strengthening alternative supply routes and sources so that fuel availability remains stable for households and industries. The discussions between the two countries come as global oil and gas markets remain volatile amid tensions affecting key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.
