Zimbabwe Man Compares Life In India to Home, Video Goes Viral

Zimbabwe man's viral video compares life and education in India.

Zimbabwean national Kalumba Mwale, who is living in India, has offered an outsider’s perspective on the country’s education system, healthcare, food and culture. In an Instagram post, Mwale compared his experiences in India with life in Zimbabwe, saying his time in the country changed his understanding of where international opportunities can be found. His observations, particularly about education and the range of choices available to students, attracted widespread attention online, with the video crossing 5.3 million views.

Mwale said students in Zimbabwe can face intense competition when seeking university admission, while India has a large number of colleges offering courses across a wide range of disciplines. He noted that people in Zimbabwe often associate studying abroad with destinations such as the US, UK, Canada and Australia. However, his experience in India showed him that international education opportunities are not restricted to Western countries. He was particularly surprised to see students from numerous countries choosing India for their education and career plans.

Healthcare was another area Mwale highlighted in his comparison. He said access to specialised medical treatment can be limited or expensive in Zimbabwe, while India has developed a reputation as a major destination for international patients seeking advanced medical care. His observations added another dimension to his broader argument that countries outside the traditional Western destinations can also offer significant opportunities in education, healthcare and professional life.

Mwale also spoke about the differences between Zimbabwean and Indian food culture. He described meals in Zimbabwe as commonly featuring staples such as sadza, rice and stews, with chilli often being the main source of spice. India, he said, offers an enormous variety of regional cuisines and flavours, allowing people to eat something different almost every day. For Mwale, Indian cuisine demonstrated that spice is not simply about adding chilli but encompasses a much wider range of flavours, ingredients and cooking traditions.

His reflections extended beyond education and food to the broader cultural experience of living in India. Mwale said his time in the country had changed his mindset and taught him that world-class education and potentially life-changing opportunities exist well beyond the Western world. Rather than viewing India simply as an alternative destination, he appeared to regard his experience as evidence that international students and professionals can find meaningful opportunities in a much wider range of countries.

The post sparked a strong response on social media, with users welcoming Mwale and sharing their own views about life in India. One commenter described the country as both welcoming and chaotic, while another said they were pleased that Mwale was discovering aspects of India that outsiders may not always notice. Another user pointed to the country's highly competitive examinations and colleges but argued that India also provides students with a large number of educational options. The discussion around Mwale’s post ultimately highlighted how living in another country can challenge assumptions about education, culture and opportunities.
