Yair Lapid Urges Netanyahu Removal, Cites Strain With US And EU Relations
Lapid urges Netanyahu’s removal amid rising diplomatic tensions.
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has sharply criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that Israel’s diplomatic relations with key allies are under serious strain amid growing tensions with the United States and the European Union. Lapid’s remarks come at a time of heightened political debate over Israel’s foreign policy direction and its handling of regional conflicts.
In a post on social media platform X, Lapid cited a series of recent diplomatic disputes involving senior Israeli officials and foreign counterparts. He referred to reported disagreements between U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Israeli ministers, tensions between Israel’s foreign ministry and EU officials, and critical comments attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Israel’s actions in Lebanon. Lapid argued that these incidents collectively reflect a deteriorating international standing for Israel.
Escalating his criticism, Lapid called for a change in leadership, warning that continued governance under the current administration could have severe consequences for Israel’s global relations. “If we don’t quickly replace this government, Israel’s foreign relations will be wiped out,” he stated, underscoring what he described as growing diplomatic isolation.

His comments come as Netanyahu faces increasing scrutiny over Israel’s foreign policy decisions, particularly amid shifting dynamics with Western allies. The backdrop includes ongoing debates in Israel over security strategy, regional military engagement, and diplomatic coordination with the United States and European Union. Opposition leaders have argued that recent developments indicate a weakening of Israel’s traditional international partnerships.
Additional political pressure has emerged following a preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran, which has sparked criticism within Israel’s political establishment. The deal, aimed at extending a ceasefire framework and reopening key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, has raised concerns among Israeli officials who believe the country’s strategic objectives in the region remain unfulfilled.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak also criticised Netanyahu, accusing him of strategic miscalculations and saying Israel had “paid the price” for flawed decision-making. Barak argued that Iran had emerged stronger while Israel’s position had weakened, intensifying domestic debate over the government’s foreign policy approach.
The growing political divide highlights increasing tensions within Israel’s leadership over how best to manage relationships with global powers while addressing regional security challenges, with opposition figures warning that diplomatic strains could have long-term consequences for the country’s international standing.
