Xi Urges BRICS to Take Lead on Middle East Peace

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on BRICS nations to help bring an end to the conflict in the Middle East, saying China is prepared to work with other members of the grouping to promote peace in West Asia. Speaking at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday, Xi urged the bloc to play its “due role” in addressing the ongoing crisis.

Xi described BRICS as an important platform for cooperation among emerging and developing economies and called on member countries to stand on “the right side of history” while responding to the conflict. He said the war had caused serious losses for people across the region and argued that the violence did not serve the common interests of the international community.

The Chinese president’s remarks came as leaders of the 11-member grouping gathered for the two-day summit hosted by India. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was also present at the meeting, adding significance to discussions involving the Middle East conflict and the role of emerging powers in addressing international crises.

Xi’s participation in the summit is also being closely watched in the context of India-China relations. His visit to India is his first since 2019 and comes amid signs of a gradual thaw in ties between the two countries following the deadly 2020 border clash in the Galwan Valley. The meeting has therefore attracted attention beyond the summit’s formal agenda.

Alongside his comments on the Middle East, Xi used the gathering to advocate deeper technology cooperation among BRICS members. He urged countries to expand collaboration in open-source artificial intelligence and invited them to join a Beijing-led AI bloc, presenting technological cooperation as another area in which the grouping could strengthen its collective influence.

Xi also called on BRICS to play a leading role in shaping global governance frameworks for cyberspace, outer space and deep-sea resources. He argued that member countries should work together to establish rules in these emerging areas rather than leave the development of international standards primarily to Western-led institutions.
