Xi Jinping arrives in North Korea for rare high-level diplomatic visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in North Korea on Monday for a rare high-level visit, declaring an “invincible friendship” between Beijing and Pyongyang as he began his first overseas trip of the year, according to state media reports. Xi was received at Pyongyang airport with full ceremonial honours, where military officers lined a red carpet as an Air China aircraft carrying the Chinese leader landed.

Video footage released by Xinhua showed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol-ju welcoming Xi, who was accompanied by First Lady Peng Liyuan, in a closely choreographed reception marked by flags, banners, and a formal guard of honour. The visit, Xi’s first to North Korea since 2019, comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tension and stalled nuclear diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula.

China remains North Korea’s most important economic and diplomatic partner, providing critical support despite extensive international sanctions imposed on Pyongyang over its nuclear weapons programme. During the welcome ceremony, Xi and Kim Jong Un exchanged handshakes and brief greetings, while children presented flowers to the visiting Chinese delegation.

A banner displayed at the venue read “We warmly welcome Comrade Xi Jinping” and highlighted the “unbreakable friendship” between the two countries, underscoring the symbolic importance of the visit. The trip follows a series of high-profile diplomatic engagements in Beijing, where Xi recently hosted US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin separately. The White House had previously stated that Xi and Trump “confirmed their shared goal to denuclearise North Korea” during talks in Beijing, although progress on nuclear negotiations with Washington remains stalled.

Tensions over North Korea’s nuclear programme continue to define regional dynamics. Kim Jong Un’s influential sister recently reiterated Pyongyang’s position that its nuclear arsenal is “the line of no retreat,” signalling continued resistance to disarmament. In contrast, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has urged sustained efforts toward denuclearisation while warning of ongoing nuclear material production by the North.

Analysts suggest China’s approach during the visit is likely to prioritise regional stability over immediate disarmament outcomes. Experts note that while Beijing maintains official support for denuclearisation, it may be increasingly accommodating North Korea’s status quo as a nuclear-armed state, focusing instead on preventing escalation and maintaining strategic balance amid broader US-China tensions.
