Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin Hold Formal Talks and Tea Diplomacy in Beijing

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin hold informal diplomatic talks in Beijing.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to hold high-level talks in Beijing on Wednesday, featuring formal discussions, a signing ceremony, and an informal “tea diplomacy” session between the two leaders, according to Reuters reports. The meeting comes amid heightened international attention due to a series of back-to-back diplomatic engagements involving major global powers. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing a day before the summit, with both sides describing each other as “old friends.”

The visit includes structured bilateral discussions covering both international and strategic issues, followed by a private tête-à-tête over tea—an informal format frequently used by Xi Jinping in engagements with visiting heads of state. The “tea diplomacy” session is seen as a symbolic and strategic element of China’s diplomatic style rather than a casual interaction. Xi Jinping is known to host select foreign leaders in informal tea settings, which are often interpreted as a sign of personal regard and political closeness.

When Putin visited in May 2024, the two leaders reportedly held discussions in an outdoor tea stting at Zhongnanhai, the central headquarters of China’s ruling Communist Party. This year’s summit is expected to be significantly structured, with the Kremlin indicating “serious expectations” for the visit. Reports suggest that around 40 documents may be signed, alongside a comprehensive 47-page joint statement outlining the strategic direction of the China–Russia partnership.

A separate declaration on multipolarity and a “new type of international relations” is also anticipated.Economic and energy cooperation is expected to be a central theme of the discussions. One key topic likely to be addressed is the proposed Power of Siberia 2 pipeline, which would transport Russian natural gas to northern China. While negotiations continue, analysts suggest Beijing may continue balancing its energy imports to avoid overdependence on any single supplier.

The summit also follows closely after US President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Beijing, adding to the geopolitical significance of the timing. Observers note that the succession of high-level visits highlights Beijing’s growing centrality in global diplomacy and its ability to engage simultaneously with major competing powers. According to Reuters, bilateral trade between China and Russia has continued to grow steadily, rising 16.1% in the first four months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Analysts say this expanding economic base provides stability ahead of what both governments are framing as a key strategic diplomatic engagement.
