Xi Jinping And Pedro Sánchez Agree To Safeguard Global Multilateralism
Xi and Sánchez back global multilateral cooperation efforts today.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez pledged on Tuesday to strengthen bilateral ties and jointly safeguard multilateralism amid global conflicts, trade tensions, and geopolitical challenges.
The two leaders met at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where Xi emphasized the need for closer communication and cooperation. “We should strengthen communication, consolidate mutual trust, cooperate closely, oppose the world’s retrogression to the law of the jungle, and jointly safeguard genuine multilateralism,” Xi said during the reception for the Spanish premier. Sánchez concurred, stating that China and Spain “can contribute to finding solutions to the various trade tensions that exist, to the geopolitical difficulties and complexities of today’s world, to the wars, to the environmental and social challenges that afflict the world.”
Sánchez’s visit marks his fourth trip to China in just over three years, reflecting Spain’s efforts to deepen political and commercial relations with Beijing. The meeting comes as Spain positions itself as a bridge between China and the European Union, particularly amid strained transatlantic ties and U.S. policy shifts. Both nations affirmed their support for open trade, with Xi noting that “there is no winner in a tariff war” and warning against unilateral actions that could lead to self-isolation.

The discussions highlighted the 20th anniversary of the China-Spain comprehensive strategic partnership. Leaders expressed commitment to expanding cooperation in areas such as new energy, high-tech manufacturing, smart cities, and people-to-people exchanges, including student programs to engage younger generations. They also addressed broader international issues, including climate change, poverty reduction, and maintaining the international trade order.
Both countries view themselves as positive forces for multilateralism and openness. Xi reiterated China’s support for EU unity and stability, while Sánchez underscored Spain’s adherence to the one-China policy and its desire for stable EU-China relations. The leaders called for a fair and equitable global governance system to promote peace, security, and shared prosperity in a multipolar world.
The encounter occurs against a backdrop of complex global dynamics, including ongoing conflicts and economic uncertainties. Officials from both sides expressed willingness to enhance coordination in multilateral forums such as the United Nations and G20 to address shared challenges and inject stability into international affairs.
