World Ozone Day 2026 Marks Global Action For A Cooler Planet
UN marks the 2026 ozone protection theme on September 16.
The United Nations is observing World Ozone Day, officially known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, on September 16, 2026, with the theme “Global Action for a Cooler Planet”. This year’s observance celebrates the Montreal Protocol and highlights the impact of its Kigali Amendment a decade after its adoption. The day is intended to underline the importance of international cooperation in protecting the ozone layer while addressing the growing need for sustainable cooling.
The UN said the Montreal Protocol has demonstrated how science-based policies, broad participation, strong compliance, sustained funding and international partnerships can deliver environmental results. The treaty has helped countries reduce the use of substances that damage the ozone layer while supporting the transition towards safer alternatives. According to the UN, these efforts have also demonstrated that environmental protection can progress alongside economic development.
The Kigali Amendment has expanded the Protocol’s role by targeting hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, which are potent greenhouse gases. The agreement aims to drive their global phase-down while encouraging more energy-efficient and sustainable cooling technologies. The UN said progress over the past decade has shown how climate action can be aligned with development priorities, technological innovation and improvements across the cooling sector.

The ozone layer is a protective layer of gas in the atmosphere that absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation and helps protect life on Earth. Human-made chemicals including chlorofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons and halons have contributed to ozone depletion by releasing chlorine or bromine into the atmosphere. World Ozone Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1994 to commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on September 16, 1987.
The UN has also highlighted the connection between ozone protection, climate change and access to cooling as global temperatures rise. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said efficient cooling can save lives as extreme heat becomes more common, while stressing that access to such cooling needs to be provided fairly and sustainably. The Vienna Convention and Montreal Protocol achieved another historic milestone on September 16, 2009, when they became the first treaties in UN history to achieve universal ratification.
To mark the 2026 observance, the UN Environment Programme’s Ozone Secretariat has prepared a social media package in six languages. The material includes cards, posters and suggested messages for public use and is intended to support awareness of the importance of protecting the ozone layer. The UN’s observance this year therefore combines recognition of past progress under the Montreal Protocol with continued attention to climate-friendly and energy-efficient cooling solutions.
