A 50-year-old woman has died in the US state of Florida after being attacked by two pit bulls in a neighbourhood incident that residents say follows repeated concerns about aggressive behaviour by the animals. The victim, identified as Jodi Cowan, was attacked on Tuesday in Brevard County, according to local media reports. Authorities said the incident occurred in a residential area where neighbours had previously expressed concerns about stray or loosely controlled dogs roaming the streets.
Her husband, Donnell Smith, said he heard her calls for help after briefly leaving their home to assist nearby neighbours. When he rushed to the scene, he reportedly found his wife severely injured on the roadside, with the two dogs still in the vicinity. Speaking to local broadcasters, Smith described a traumatic scene in which he saw his wife being dragged by the animals. He said he attempted to intervene and called emergency services immediately, but despite rapid medical response, Cowan was airlifted to hospital and later died from her injuries.
Residents in the area told local media that the dogs involved had allegedly shown aggressive behaviour in the past and were frequently seen roaming without restraint. Some neighbours also claimed that prior complaints had been made to animal control authorities, raising questions about whether earlier intervention could have prevented the fatal attack. According to Smith, Cowan may have been trying to protect the couple’s smaller pet dog at the time of the incident.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured her walking with her dog shortly before the attack took place, providing investigators with a timeline of her final movements. Local authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack, including the history of the animals involved and whether negligence or failure to enforce prior complaints contributed to the fatal outcome.
