Wiz Khalifa Sentenced to 9 Months in Romanian Prison After Onstage Cannabis Incident
Romanian court sentences Wiz Khalifa to nine months in prison for onstage cannabis use at 2024 festival.
American Rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian Court following a drug-related incident during a music festival in the country. The ruling comes more than a year after the artist was arrested and charged with illegal possession and consumption of cannabis while performing on stage. The case has drawn international attention due to Khalifa’s global profile and U.S. citizenship.
The incident occurred in July 2024 during the “Beach, Please!” festival in Costinești, Romania. Authorities alleged that Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, possessed over 18 grams of cannabis and consumed some of it publicly during his performance. Romanian law strictly prohibits recreational drug use, regardless of the individual’s nationality or public status.
Following the performance, Khalifa addressed the controversy in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he had no intention of disrespecting Romania or its laws. He acknowledged the situation and thanked authorities for treating him respectfully at the time, adding humorously that he would return without repeating the act. Despite the statement, prosecutors continued to pursue the case.

The Constanța Court of Appeal ultimately convicted Khalifa of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption.” In its ruling, the court emphasized that the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent, arguing that Khalifa’s public actions normalized illegal behavior and could influence young audiences toward drug use.
Previously, a lower court had imposed a criminal fine of approximately USD 830 in April 2025. However, prosecutors appealed the decision, calling for a harsher penalty, which resulted in the prison sentence. As Khalifa is a U.S. citizen, it remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will pursue extradition to enforce the sentence, leaving the final outcome uncertain.
