Who Was Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, ISIS Global Deputy Killed by US-Nigeria Forces?

Abu-Bilal killed in US-Nigeria ISIS joint operation strike.

Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, described by the United States as a senior Islamic State (ISIS) leader and reportedly the group’s second-in-command globally, has been killed in a joint operation involving US and Nigerian forces, according to an announcement made by US President Donald Trump. Trump stated in a post on Truth Social that the operation was “carefully planned” and “flawlessly executed” by American forces in coordination with the Nigerian military.

He said the mission targeted what he called “the most active terrorist in the world,” adding that al-Minuki had been tracked by intelligence sources despite attempts to evade detection in Africa. According to US officials cited in prior sanctions records, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki was born in 1982 in Nigeria’s Borno State, a region that has long faced insurgent activity linked to extremist groups. He was previously designated under US sanctions in 2023 by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which tracks individuals and entities involved in terrorism financing and related criminal networks.

The announcement did not provide operational details, including the exact location of the strike, the nature of the military action, or whether it involved airstrikes or ground forces. The absence of specific tactical information has left several aspects of the operation unverified independently at this stage. Trump also thanked the Nigerian government for its cooperation in the mission.

The statement comes against a backdrop of previously strained rhetoric, with Trump having earlier accused Nigeria of failing to adequately protect Christian communities—claims that the Nigerian government has rejected. ISIS, also known as the Islamic State, has faced sustained military pressure across multiple regions in recent years, but continues to operate through dispersed cells in parts of Africa and the Middle East. The reported killing of a senior figure like al-Minuki, if confirmed independently, would represent a significant development in ongoing counter-terrorism efforts targeting the group’s leadership structure.
