West Bengal Health Department Revises Ceiling On Trainee Reserve Doctors
Bengal expands trainee reserve doctor opportunities.
The West Bengal Health Department on Friday increased the maximum permissible number of doctors under the “trainee reserve” category from 477 to 662, a move aimed at expanding specialist medical services in the state-run healthcare system. The decision was announced through an official notification issued by the department.
The “trainee reserve” category includes in-service government medical officers who are temporarily relieved from their regular duties to pursue government-sponsored postgraduate degree or diploma courses. These doctors continue to remain government employees while receiving opportunities for higher medical education, particularly those serving in rural and remote healthcare facilities.
Officials said the increase in the trainee reserve ceiling was aimed at creating more specialist doctors for government hospitals and improving the quality of healthcare delivery across the state. Medical officers from the West Bengal Health Service, West Bengal Public Health Administrative Service and West Bengal Health Education Service are covered under this category.

The West Bengal Doctors’ Forum welcomed the decision, stating that the move would allow more eligible doctors to pursue advanced studies such as MD and MS courses. The forum said the earlier limit had prevented several doctors from accessing higher education opportunities when the reserved slots were already filled.
Medical organisations had been demanding an increase in the trainee reserve limit for a long time, arguing that the previous cap contributed to the loss of postgraduate opportunities in medical sciences. They said expanding the limit would help reduce the chances of postgraduate seats remaining unused and support the creation of a larger pool of trained specialists.
The Health Department’s decision comes after the state government indicated that it would take steps to strengthen medical education and healthcare services. Officials said increasing the number of doctors receiving postgraduate training would ultimately improve the availability of specialised medical care across West Bengal.
